"Barro literally means "mud" but generally means "clay," and olla means "pot." Ollas are large, deep clay pots perfect for simmering beans, stews and soups. The clay heats evenly and is perfect for all-day cooking over a direct flame. The clay can be fragile and sensitive to quick temperature changes. Cooking in the clay pots imparts an earthy flavor to the dish".
She'd also have a jug made out of barro used for water. I remember that earthy smell that would com from it and the water would taste slightly different. =) It's pretty neat actually. The little dishes I have now are just used for decoration. They are too precious to me!
Well, I thought I'd make a few in miniature. Usually these Mexican style dishes are decorated with lovely flowers or some sort of a design but I haven't quite gotten there yet. I think I need to practice my painting skills first on a piece of paper or something ;-) But here is what I came up with for now.
This little one on the corner is a tortilla warmer. =) Used, for, well, keeping your tortillas warm for flour or corn tortillas. Mmm!
I made two sizes of bowls. Us Mexicans like to eat our caldo (soup) in big bowls and the small ones used as serving dishes or just small servings of food. =)
Some plates, cups, a jug for water, and a big serving dish. =)
Now that Spring is here, well sort of anyway...I haven't seen the sun in days now and I really do miss it! =( But anyway, now that the weather will be getting better and better I will be doing other stuff other than clay. I'm really sad about that but I need to get myself in gear and start Spring cleaning my house! =) My parents are coming in June and I want this place to be shining! hahaha =) Can't wait for summer!

I LOVE mexican food and spanish foods like tapas. The best!
The pots are really good and great coloring.
OMG, these are wonderful! These beautiful dishes are making me homesick for Chicago where my friends and I would often walk down the street to this fantastic Mexican restaurant called La Cocina de Frida, which had the BEST fried plantain enchiladas. Yum!
Oh, I love your barro! I can almost taste the Mexican food already :) I love the Mexican flavours.
Thanks for your comments! =) I hope to use up these dishes with some miniature Mexican food. Burritos, enchiladas, rice and beans. =) Taquitos, tamales...oh the list goes on!
Somehow these type of dishes make food taste better :) Great idea! I love the pitcher.
